Measuring it properly
Fill the tank to the click, reset the trip, drive normally for a few hundred miles, then fill to the click again. Miles on the trip divided by gallons put in gives the true figure. Doing it over a single tank on an unusual journey will mislead; two or three tanks gives a fair average.
Gallons and litres
An imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres. American sites use a smaller gallon of 3.785 litres, which is why a car described as doing fifty miles per gallon in Britain is quoted at about forty-two on an American site. Litres per hundred kilometres, used across most of Europe, works the other way round: lower is better.
