Waste is not optional
Tiles get cut at every edge and the offcuts are rarely usable elsewhere, so ten per cent is the usual allowance on a straightforward rectangular room. Laying diagonally, or into a room with alcoves and pipe boxings, takes fifteen per cent or more.
Batch shading
Ceramic and porcelain tiles are fired in batches and the shade varies slightly between them. Buying all the tiles at once, from the same batch, avoids a visible change halfway across a floor. Keeping half a dozen spares is sensible; matching a discontinued tile in five years' time is not realistic.
