What a cubic metre holds
A cubic metre is a thousand litres, or about 220 imperial gallons. It is also roughly 1.5 tonnes of topsoil, 1.6 tonnes of gravel, or 2.4 tonnes of concrete, which is why volume rather than weight is the useful measure when ordering.
Ponds
For a pond, the useful figure is litres, because liners, pumps and treatments are all sized by volume. An irregular pond can be estimated by taking the average length, average width and average depth, which is usually close enough.
