How Statutory Maternity Pay works
Statutory Maternity Pay runs for up to thirty-nine weeks. The first six weeks are paid at ninety per cent of your average weekly earnings, with no upper limit. The remaining thirty-three weeks are paid at £194.32 a week, or at ninety per cent of your average weekly earnings if that is lower.
Leave and pay are not the same thing
Statutory maternity leave can last fifty-two weeks: twenty-six weeks of ordinary leave and twenty-six of additional leave. Only the first thirty-nine are paid, so the last thirteen weeks are unpaid unless your employer offers more.
If you do not qualify
Statutory Maternity Pay depends on length of service and on earning at least the lower earnings limit. Where it is not payable, Maternity Allowance may be, and it is claimed from the Department for Work and Pensions rather than from an employer.
Contractual schemes
