The statutory minimum

Notice you must give
An employee who resigns must give at least one week's notice once they have worked for a month, whatever their length of service. The contract very often requires more, particularly for senior roles, and it is the contract that governs.
Pay during notice, and pay instead of notice
You are normally entitled to your usual pay throughout the notice period. An employer may instead pay you in lieu of notice, ending the employment straight away and paying what you would have earned, but only if the contract allows it or you agree.
